it's been a long year but, it's been a year! on april 9th, kai will officially be 1 year post transplant. her risk of rejection drops significantly! as of the 6th, kai's doctor's plan to lower her immuno-suppressant blood-level to 2, which is very low and will allow her body to defend it's self, even better, against viruses and infections.
we will always need to exercise caution as she will still be suppressed and more susceptible to illness than average (washing/sanitizing hands, staying away from people who are sick) but, it will be less likely for her to become ill and the decrease in medication will be easier on her overworked kidneys.
kai is doing great! she is walking and talking and doing all the things that normal 1 1/2 year old's do. she is especially feisty and has a great sense of humor. she loves to dance, sing and is having a fine time keeping me on my toes as she is getting into EVERYTHING! ryan is also doing very well. he's 100% recovered and is back to playing soccer and is even going back to school.
in honor of kai, ryan and the wonderful doctors, nurses, friends and family that helped us through the events of this past year, we are participating in the American Liver Foundation's Liver Walk for Life.
we'll be walking in Louisville, KY on May 17th and in Maryland on September 26th.
