we had another appointment with kai’s surgeons today to check her progress. ...she has gotten worse, even since tuesday. despite the new medications, she is still retaining too much fluid on her abdomen. she’s swollen so much that she has two hernias where there is just not enough room in her tiny body to hold it all. the doctors are worried about infection. they increased her meds again and we were instructed to take her to the ER if there is any indication that she is worsening over the weekend. we take her back to see the surgeons on monday and, if the fluid/swelling has not gone down, we will be readmitted to the PICU until kai’s surgery. they advised us to come with a bag packed.
on the upside, ryan has been approved to donate part of his liver to her. he has to get a femoral arterial gram before the surgery, which has been tentatively scheduled for april 30th but very likely will be before that, due to her deteriorating condition.
