In 2011, we started an annual event to bring a holiday dinner and gifts to children and their families admitted to Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. over the holiday season. We raised over $2,000 and were able to bring two Turkeys and enough sides and desserts to feed the children and families stuck in the hospital over the Holiday, as well as the medical staff who volunteered to work on Christmas Eve. Additionally, we donated bags of toys and gifts, and gift cards for gas and groceries to help families struggling under the weight of medical costs.
In 2012, we were also able to buy the hospital much needed hospital-grade baby swings.
We're gearing up for this year's event and would be happy to accept any help or donations offered. You can make monetary donations here:
The following is a list of things we are hoping to collect or purchase - many come from the hospital's wish-list:
1. Monetary donations will go toward providing dinner for the children and their families "stuck" in the hospital over the holidays.
2. Also, grocery and gas gift cards for families struggling with the cost of medial expenses and providing for their families/driving back and forth from the hospital. Area stores include Safeway, Giant, Shell, Exxon, etc.
3. Donations of toys to give ages infant through teen - new, in package, if used it must be able to be wiped clean. Books, Movies/DVDs and games, crafts that the kids can use in the hospital rooms to pass the time. These are not needed as much as there is a local charity - Cole's closet - that provides much of this. *MOST OF WHAT IS NEEDED IN THIS CATEGORY IS NEW TOYS FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS/Preschoolers* as the majority of the kids are in that age group.
4. Power Wheels for the kids to ride to and from their rooms to radiology, surgery, etc or to get a break from the hospital bed.
5. iTunes Gift Cards to purchase iPad Apps to help distract little ones while they get blood drawn, get an IV or PICC line placed, need to lay still for a CT scan or Sonogram, etc.
6. BabyCare Play Mats
7. Shadow Buddies Liver Transplant Buddies dolls
If you prefer to send a donation of toys, games or other non-monetary gift, OR if you know a business that would be willing to help, please contact Jasmine at 007jas@gmail.com.
**Important Note: Liver Mommas is not currently an NPO and any donation made will not be tax deductible. We hope to achieve NPO status in 2014.
Update 12/23/2013:
Thanks to everyone for their support! Your donations bought 2 power wheels for the kids to ride back and forth to radiology, surgery and other procedures in, 2 babycare playmats for infant play/physical therapy, hundreds of coloring books and coloring supplies, toys and gifts for the kids, gift cards for food for families staying with their children who are admitted for long durations, accessories to keep the baby swings we bought last year in working order... Oh! And a turkey dinner with sides/desserts from Whole Foods! With a little left over to go toward making Liver Mommas an official NPO next year!
I'll leave this page up; anything donated/received after Christmas will either be taken to Georgetown during our next visit (we go at least once a month) or go toward NPO certification fees.
Happy Holidays!
