Bubbly, but not in a bubble.

Kai is doing well, overall. Her infusions seem to make her really tired, so we are having a lot of meltdowns due to sleepiness but, overall she is active and happy and has even gained some weight (she lost a lot being sick in the last couple of months).

Some people have asked me if this changes my mind about sending her to preschool: it does not. We knew, when we enrolled her in school, that she might get sick a little more. We also knew that we were extremely lucky to have her avoid hospitalization for a year and a half and that luck was bound to run out eventually.

CMV is such a common virus and, in most people, causes such mild symptoms that she could have picked it up anywhere. School is one place but, they are very careful to clean and wipe down all the surfaces before Kai comes into the classroom and her teachers and parents call me if they think they are sick or have been around someone sick. There are so many places she could have contracted it from that it isn't even worth mulling over.

She's going to get sick sometimes and it can't always be prevented. I can't keep her isolated and in a bubble. She needs normal interaction with other children or she will never learn to socialize with her peers. That said, we still continue to try and take every precaution. It's a balancing act.

Kai went back to school this past Thursday. She was extremely excited to see all of her friends and teachers. She was definitely tired by the end of class but, her teachers said she did very well. We plan to continue to send our sleepy little Kai-bug to school while she recovers from this bout of illness (as she is not contagious).  It gives her a distraction and helps by getting her back into her normal routine. She has another week on the infusions before her doctor's reevaluate her treatment to decide if she needs to continue the infusions or if they can be stopped/tapered down.
