reef wallace hollingsworth finally decided to make his appearance Nov. 27th, 2009 at 9:05pm; just 3 hours shy of his sister's 2nd birthday!
after a month on bed rest due to preterm labor, we thought he would just pop right out but, he had other plans! he waited almost another week... we had received a call from kai's doctor's at georgetown that her liver enzymes were elevated and we needed to bring her in for more blood work and an ultrasound (everything turned out to be fine). as we were preparing to leave that morning i began having some irregular contractions. we were able to make it the 2-hours to the hospital, get kai's tests done and come back home before hard labor set in around 6pm. the midwife arrived and checked and i was already 7cm dilated! they barely had time to get in the door and get set up before it was time to push; there wasn't even time to set up the birthing pool for the water birth. he'd waited long enough and he was impatient to come out! at 9:05pm, they laid him on my belly (all 8lbs, 10oz of him) as i opened my eyes to see ryan jumping up and down, cheering and clapping his hands at the end of the bed. i won't lie... it hurt!! but, i did it at home, on my own terms without any drugs with the assistance of two amazing certified nurse midwives and, although homebirth may not be for everyone, it was the right decision for us. i'm feeling rather triumphant!
many thanks to evelyn and lori with alternative birth choices, our wonderful friend brittney, who watched kai for us, to ryan-who is an awesome birth partner, and to my amazing mom & dad.
...and to reef: we're so glad you've come. :)
